Abstract

The article aims to discuss on the pronounced differences between the scene of the May Revolution and the Independence, as well as those of its commemorations in Centennial and Bicentennial. Such differences allow building a set of explanatory axes articulated in different time horizons, from which is inferred a profound articulation of economic, social and political phenomena. The dynamics of confrontations and alliances between classes and sectors, expressed in the bid for control of the state, and the interweaving of the internal and international integration result in significant alterations that, however, also involve some notable regularities.
