Abstract

Starting from a quote from Marx, the following hypothesis was developed: the deviations in market prices with respect to production prices can be explained, partially, by the deviations of the realized sectorial rates of surplus value, with respect to the average rate of surplus value. Labor-values were estimated in two different meanings (with an average surplus-value rate and a realized surplus-value rate) and also international production prices using multi-country input-product tables with employment and remuneration data of the OECD (ICIO, 2023; TiM, 2023). A data panel was compiled covering 41 sectors in 54 countries for a period of 26 years. The regressions are highly significant and show that approximately 64% of the deviations in surplus value rates are transferred to market prices.
