To improve is to change: The recent evolution of the economics curricula in Chile
Abstract
In the last five years, the teaching of economics in Chile has experienced an important transformation in the sense that most Chilean universities which teach economics separated from business administration, have made changes in their curricula. This, probably triggered by the global financial crisis, the renewed questioning of economics as a discipline and the political and social environment existing in Chile in recent years. A temporal and cross comparison among universities shows a still unfinished restructuring of careers where economics is taught. These changes imply a decline in the importance of the lines of business and management, and micro-macroeconomics. At the same time, it increases the study of social sciences and humanities, quantitative methods, with greater freedom in choosing elective courses.
